What Are GYROTONIC® & GYROKINESIS® Methods?
The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® was created by Juliu Horvath as a way to heal himself from a multitude of injuries that ultimately ended his professional dance career. The system has roots in yoga, Tai Chi, swimming, and dance. The ultimate goal is for the body to work as one harmonious organism free from restriction. This is achieved through the spiraling and circular movements that are performed either on the specialized equipment or on the stool and floor in a GYROKINESIS® class.
The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® goes beyond conventional strength training. GYROTONIC® training is a series of circular and fluid exercises that work the entire body through muscular, skeletal, and cardiovascular stimulation. It was developed by Juliu Horvath and is based on the principles of yoga, dance, swimming, gymnastics and Tai chi.
The GYROTONIC® exercise method is a holistic approach to movement that is designed to be highly adaptable making it accessible to everyone, regardless of age or physical ability. The method involves circular movements with special attention paid to increasing the functional capacity of the spine in order to enhance body mechanics and create balance and alignment. The system is supported by specially designed equipment that uses weights and pulleys to provide resistance.
The GYROKINESIS® exercise method allows you to work on the entire body through seven natural elements of spinal movement: forward, backward, left side, right side, left twist, right twist and circular, as well as all other joint articulation.
This approach gently works the joints and muscles through rhythmic and undulating movements. These movements stimulate the body’s internal organs while different corresponding breathing patterns are integrated along with the movements.
Fluidity is the key. Postures are not held for long periods of time. Instead, postures are smoothly and harmoniously connected through the use of breath, making exercises appear and feel more like a dance and swimming than like traditional Yoga.
